Frequently asked questions
Here are answers to some common questions we’re asked about Zen Kitten.
Q: Why’s it called Zen Kitten?
The theme was originally designed for use on the Put Things Off blog, whose mascot was an adorable and rather laid-back kitten. We’ve adapted it for use with WordPress, but wanted to acknowledge its roots.
Q: I’ve created a new page. Why isn’t there a link to it on the homepage?
The navigation links on the left of every page won’t grow when you add new pages — this is by design. If you want to provide an index of pages, we suggest you add the ‘Pages’ widget to your footer.
Q: I’m fussy about typography. Can I typeset my titles to prevent orphaned words?
Of course. In the WordPress post editor, just add ‘<br>’ in your title before the word you’d like to push over to the next line. Zen Kitten will make sure your typesetting choice is adhered to on your post page, without messing up your category index or homepage titles.
Q: Is there a way to prevent the first line of new paragraphs from being indented?
Yes. Just use soft breaks when creating new lines. To type a soft break on your keyboard, press and hold down the shift key before pressing enter. Browsers will now see this as a continuation of the original paragraph and will no longer indent the line. It’s how this page is typeset.
Q: How do I turn off the drop capital on subpages?
There’s no theme option for this at the moment, but you can turn drop capitals off by editing the file called ‘zenkitten.js’ in the ’/wp-content/themes/zenkitten/js/’ folder, scrolling to line 44, and commenting it out by putting two forward slashes before it.
